Mosaic for Rose
A huge hello to the New Brighton community!
We are a small local project that has been working on a memorial mosaic for Rose.
You will likely remember Rose (also known as Barbara) Campbell who was tragically killed in our community in January 2022.
(see article for more detail - https://interactives.stuff.co.nz/2022/06/tortured-soul-the-story-of-barbara-campbell/).
Our community was devastated and shocked by Rose’s journey and the awful end to her life. There was a huge amount of love and compassionate comments shared on social media at the time.
We placed flowers at the site, and a vigil was held.
Now that time has gone on, our community is healing and there is a graffiti-style memorial on the derelict building at the site which might not be there forever, as there is a great need for this building to be removed.
Our community project, which has involvement and support from Rose’s family, intends to ensure that Rose’s life is always remembered, respectfully.
In June this year, we will install a memorial mosaic in the community garden of the Union Street Church.
So far we have:
Whilst some key aspects of the project have costs associated with them, the rest have been completed voluntarily. We need your help to raise the last portion of funding.
In total we need to raise $3000 for the mosaic creation with the local mosaic artists. This will cover labour and materials. $1000 has already been granted to us by the Urban Development Team at the Christchurch NZ organisation. We therefore have $2000 left to raise.
Over February we will run a community raffle to raise this amount.
Any excess funds raised will be donated to the New Brighton Community Food Pantry as already. This means that there are two awesome outcomes for the funds raised from this project if we raise over our $2000 goal!

- Secured funding for and completed the mosaic design phase with a local graphic artist (see image below)
- Been approved a permanent location for the mosaic at the New Brighton Union Street Church community garden
- Secured a partial amount of funding for the physical creation of the mosaic (i.e. artist's time and resources)
- Secured a builder who will voluntarily install the mosaic
