The New Brighton Blanket Bank was created in 2012, when New Brighton Project became a referral point for CEA's Curtain Bank.
NBP’s Community Co-ordinator was visiting the Curtain Bank and found they often had blankets left in their collection bins — with no room to store them, they wanted to pass them on.
We knew there were people in need of warm bedding. We had some free space, volunteers willing to lend a hand and the project was a great fit with our vision— Creating Community Together.
Each year since then has seen an increase in clients and agencies from across Canterbury accessing our service as well as donations, which come from all over the country.
In 2018 we gave out hundreds of items to support keeping our city warm.
This winter we are busier than ever. Many Christchurch homes are still insufficiently insulated and the cost of heating is not going down. We also support people every year who are living in cars or sleeping on the streets.
We see the blanket bank as a heart project. It is all about giving and receiving free from judgement.
If you can support us with bedding or some volunteer time sorting and folding please read our “How you can help us” donation guidelines in the “Notes section”

How we can help you
When donations allow, clients may receive sheets, duvet/quilt and a blanket (single, double, queen, king – if required and depending on availability) and on occasion, extras such as pillows, towels, wheat bags, hot water bottles, sleeping bags etc.
To receive bedding, please contact us via phone 3889920 or 0221563683, email, facebook — tell us how many, and what size, beds you have and we will make up your packs ready to be picked up.
The Blanket Bank is open Tuesday to Friday 10.30am to 2pm.
Packs are held for 2 days from ordering, so please text to make an appointment to pick up.
